From the valley of Lilantas to the fertile coast
Includes 11 stops/visits
On the third suggested route, heading towards south Euboea, you will see the settlement of Mytikas, the so-called Twin Towers, the Castle of the Fylloi and, in the village of Vasiliko, the fairly recently restored medieval fort, built by the Latin lords of Euboea. The next stop is Eretria, the best preserved ancient city in Euboea, where one can see the fortifications which protected the city, houses, public buildings, temples, such as the temple of Apollo Daphnephoros and, of course, the theatre. You must pay a visit to the Archaeological Museum.
As the road continues to the south, you reach Aliveri, where a good number of medieval monuments have survived. On a nearby hill rises the medieval castle known as Rizokastro. Also, within the grounds of the Aliveri thermoelectric power plant there are a medieval fort, early Byzantine baths and other antiquities, which are signs of the continuous habitation of the area from ancient times.
The church of Panagitsa is within the town of Aliveri.
On the outskirts of the town is the church of Agios Dimitrios, known as Kokkinoekklisia [red church]. At the end of the tour, on reaching Avlonari, an important centre during Byzantine times, you come to the impressive church of Agios Dimitrios in Chania, while a well-preserved medieval tower dominates the hill in the centre of Avlonari.
